A GLOBAL CONCERN

Sharks are amazing animals that have been on Earth
for 450 million years and are critical to the balance
of our oceans. There are more than 400 species of
shark, of which the Caribbean is home to 33 species
including the whale shark, the reef shark, the tiger
shark, the bull shark, the hammerhead and several
species of manta rays.

EXTINCTION

Sharks have survived 5 mass extinctions throughout the history of our planet. Extinctions that ended most life on Earth, the most famous being the one that killed dinosaurs 65 million years ago. But sharks may not survive the human being.

Currently 11 thousand sharks are killed per hour, about 3.17 sharks per second. Some varieties such as the hammerhead shark have seen their population reduced by 90%.

This not only puts the shark in danger of extinction, but also compromises the entire marine ecosystem.

SAVING OUR SHARKS

The intention to protect our sharks was born from an alliance with the Saving Our Sharks foundation, who with 5 years of being in Quintana Roo has installed telemetry, ultrasonic marks, DNA and isotopic analysis, including the first bull shark identification guide, as well as a continuous monitoring program. In addition, they give talks on environmental education and their work is such that large commercial stores have been prevented from selling shark and dogfish.

THE

Shark Lab

Inside Shark Tower will be a research center for biologists and scientists dedicated to studying the psychology and behavior of the shark, focusing on the effect it has with humans on the oceans.

This laboratory will be operated by Saving Our Sharks and will allow increased protection and education work.
